This is our last Pinewood Derby for four more years when Wade is a Cub Scout, since Payton is now a Webelo... Webelos? How do I finish this sentence? Anyhow.... I'm a tiny bit bummed, but it's nothing compared to the relief and sheer joy that Shane feels at not having to figure out how to build, paint, weight and put wheels on another flipping Derby car two days before the race (procrastinators unite!)! Quite frankly, I'm a little thrilled at the prospect of not having to deal with Shane's attitude from his derby-induced irritation and stress.
BUT! This year, Payton pretty much built his OWN car! Last week for scouts, Payton took his car and he designed and cut it out on his own. He also sanded it, figured out how he wanted to paint it and did most of the painting himself (I'm not going to lie, I did a little of the touch-up paint). Shane and I just worried about the weights and the wheels. When I say weights, I don't mean using quarters like the simplefolk derby racers use. I mean, Shane drills a hole in the bottom of the car, has to melt down lead in a tuna fish can on my stove and pour the liquid hot magma into the car. Face it: he's an over-achiever. So after some slight modification to REMOVE some weight by drilling a little of the lead out, we were ready for the race.
And now: THE PICTURES!
The Red Striker
This is what my dorky kids decide to do before the race begins...
Carter just wanted to play in the nursery...
... so did Wade...
... and so did Bella.
Ready to race?
This is Payton and his friend Rylie. Last week I heard from her Aunt that Rylie has a crush on Payton.
Good taste, girlfriend! They spent the whole night hanging out with each other. SO CUTE!
Computer guy, TO THE RESCUE!
Payton's awards!
He came in 4th place (another car beat him by .3 seconds for 3rd place) with a car he built HIMSELF!
